For a truly stunning day at sea you can do no better than a day's sailing on board a beautiful tall ship. These magnificent and luxurious vessels, J R Tolkien (two-mast topsail schooner), Loth Lorien (three-mast schooner) and Artemis (three-mast barque), have masts over 30 metres high and are perfect for a day of traditional sailing. You'll begin with refreshments and a safety briefing from your experienced crew, before sailing out onto the Solent area. If you want to enjoy some hands-on activity, then there's always a job to do on board, from raising the sails to helming the ship, and the friendly crew will show you how it's done. If you'd rather, you can relax on deck and chat to the crew about the sailing life. A buffet lunch and afternoon tea will be served on board during the day.

Fantastic Birthday Present

What a fantastic day on the high seas of The Solent. From the very start, everything was perfectly organised, the Dutch crew were exceptional and enabled you to do as much or as little as you wanted with helping sail the ship. The lunch was superb and the afternoon tea was very welcoming on the return leg. Thank you for a wonderful day.

Great Day's Sailing

It was a great day on the Solent. The J R Tolkien is a great ship and the crew were friendly. It was relaxing, interesting and a truly great day out. I'm seriously thinking of treating myself and booking another day's sailing on the Tolkien next summer.

Great Experience, Never To Be Forgotten

Windy, torrential down pours of rain, rough sea! GREAT!! We were well looked after by the friendly crew. The food was excellent and hot drinks were available all day.

More information

Participant Guidelines: Under 18s must be accompanied by a participating adult. If you have a mobility restriction please contact us before booking so we can check your suitability to participate. Unfortunately the ships can't accommodate wheelchair users.

Weather: Unless conditions are severe, the weather won't stop the ships from sailing. However if there are any changes, Red Sky Sailing will contact you to advise.

Duration: Your experience lasts for seven hours, leaving the marina around 10am and returning at 5pm.

Numbers On Day: Depending on which ship you board, there will be from 60 - 80 people on board.

Spectators: Spectators are welcome to wave you off from the marina, but won't be able to board the ship with you.

Dress Code: Dress warmly and wear flat-soled shoes, e.g. deck shoes or trainers. Wear a few layers, as even in summer it can get cold out at sea. It's a good idea to bring lip balm, sunblock and a waterproof jacket, if you have them.

Availability: Selected weekend dates each month from May to September (availability varies between the two boats available).

Other Info: Refreshments on arrival, lunch and afternoon tea are included, and there is a cash bar on board.
