Sherry Glasgow of Greenwich has been crowned Britain's Best Baker after beating hundreds of entries from budding patissiers in the Red Letter Days national baking competition.
Married Sherry, 35 won the competition with her vanilla sponge and butter cream filled masterpiece, featuring various Red Letter Days experiences and topped with an incredible beach setting, complete with Demerara beach and sugared dolphins leaping from blue icing waves, representing the dolphin watching experience.
The eight finalists in the Red Letter Days national baking competition spent hours on Monday afternoon creating their masterpieces before being judged by Master Patissier Eric Lanlard, Guardian Food Blogger Oliver Thring and Red Letter Days' Managing Director Bill Alexander, whose experiences company set the competition in motion in May with a call out to bake them a 21st Birthday Cake.
The judges tasted each cake, deliberating on taste, texture, appearance before announcing the winner at 7.30PM on Monday evening.
Baking award winning cakes is a far cry from Sherry's day job in administration and being mum to her five year old daughter. However she had enrolled herself on to a ten week cake decorating course at Greenwich Community College and it was here that she found out about the competition.
"I can’t believe it," says Sherry. "The competition was so incredibly fierce; I was convinced that one of the other finalists had won the title. When Eric called out my name, I was looking around thinking it was someone else!"
Sherry and her husband are looking forward to the prize – a one week holiday in Sri Lanka. She says: "I have never been to that part of the world and it sounds absolutely fascinating. This is a holiday of a lifetime and what a way to win it!"
