  • About

A breathtaking way to fly, soaring on the same rising currents of air that the birds use. Your experience includes around an hour in the air over two flights (or a single, longer flight over the mountains if weather permits). You'll start with a briefing session before climbing aboard a dual-controlled glider with your expert instructor. The glider is then towed into the air by a light aircraft and once you're at a height of around 2,000ft the rope is released, the aircraft peels away and you're free to soar and circle lazily in the thermal currents. You'll have breathtaking views of the countryside below you and the sky around you. And - at the pilot's discretion - you'll take the controls of the glider yourself. Unforgettable.

    • You're towed into the air by a light aircraft then released at 2,000ft
    • Use the thermal currents to circle upwards
    • Expert instruction from your qualified pilot
    • Take the controls of the glider during around an hour of gliding

    Duration

Your experience begins in the morning (normally around 11am), please allow for much of the day at the club. As a guide you'll spend between 40 minutes and an hour gliding. There'll also be on-ground briefing sessions and you have to wait your turn to fly

    Numbers On Day

Your briefings might be shared, your flights will be held on a one-to-one basis with the pilot.

    Spectators

Up to six spectators are welcome to accompany you, but must follow safety directions whilst on site. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy. Why not bring a packed lunch, sit and watch for a while?

    Exciting Times

It is an amazing feeling to drift slowly into the air under tow from a light aircraft and then to be left to the mercy of the wind. While it was not the clearest day I could see enough to be of interest. Unfortunately the thermals were not sufficient to keep us going and we landed in a 4 foot high oat field. We then had the additional excitement of dismantling the glider and loading it to a trailer. There was not enough time to allow the second flight so I will have to return. I can't wait!

From the time of arrival the atmosphere was really relaxed and friendly, fantastic setting and wonderful scenery once we were airborne. Booked for two flights but the weather closed in after the first flight so I now have a pass to take another flight on another day to do it all again! (Wonderful) can't wait!

We were greeted at the Black Mountains Gliding Club with the warmest of welcomes, and made to feel at home, with a child friendly picnic area and wonderful facilities on site. The weather was perfect and the views spectacular at this beautiful location. I knew exactly when my flights would be and had time to take photos. The instructor explained everything very clearly and you always felt in very safe hands. You soon find yourself soaring at over 2000ft and as you get used to the glider you get plenty of time to take photos. If you and the instructor are happy you get chance to take control the glider and what a buzz that is. After you land back on the airfield, you get to help move the aircraft back to the launch point, ready for the next flight and then wander back to your spectators with a massive grin on your face. The second flight is usually a little longer as you are shown more of the skills involved in flying a glider and build on the skills that you learned earlier.

I Could Not Have Wished For A Better Time.

From the beginning the club members looked after me and my wife who was there as my photographer. A great time and a beautiful location.

A brilliant day. Robbie and the rest of the gliding club were really welcoming. The setting was beautiful. I had two flights and each time gained more confidence. Felt safer than I have on many jet planes. Would do it again without hesitation!

Always wanted to go gliding ever since I made models as a teenager. My choice was with the Black Mountains Gliding Club near Brecon. The setting just under the Black Mountains is spectacular, and the club members made me very welcome and were prepared to spend time explaining all that was going on. At this club, the glider is towed by a plane which takes you to the Black Mountain escarpment. Once your glider is released from the tug, it is able to use the lift from the mountains, it felt like an express lift - what an adrenalin rush. You have time to take control (you need eye, hand and foot co-ordination - I kept forgetting I had feet!) All in all a brilliant day, made more memorable by the members at the Black Mountains Gliding Club

The day worked superbly well and the Gliding club were very flexible in holding the flights a day later because of weather problems. The flights over the Black Mountains were breathtaking and I even took control of the glider for part of the flight!

    Fun Fun Fun!

The Black Mountains Gliding Club is the best location in the country to go gliding. The scenery is superb and the gliding conditions are excellent. The people we met were extremely friendly and helpful and my instructor was excellent. I have not had that much fun in years!

Very good day out. We were made very welcome. A lovely gliding club in a beautiful setting. The gliding experience was something very special, flew with a very experienced pilot for a full hour, and given the opportunity to take the controls for short periods. Took many photos.
