  • About

In 1968 Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became the first man in history to sail non-stop single handed around the globe. He pledged that one day men and women from all walks of life with no prior sailing knowledge would be able to follow in his footsteps (well, in the wake of a yacht anyway) and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was born. Since the first sailors cast off on their voyage, 1800 men and women have competed in this unique race around the continents in some of the fastest yachts of their kind. Now you can experience what it's like to be part of the sailing team on one of these extraordinary 60 or 68 ft yachts, actively taking part and learning how to steer, handle sails and haul sheets.

    • Fall in love with the sea on an amazing Clipper yacht
    • Clippers compete in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race
    • Learn how to steer, handle sails and haul sheets
    • Leave tired but elated from this spectacular yachting experience
  • Key Info

    Availability

Ome Saturday date per month from May to October, with both morning and afternoon sessions available.

    Participant Guidelines

Min age 13. Under 18s must be accompanied by a participating adult. No previous sailing experience needed and non-swimmers welcome. A physically demanding experience which will leave you feeling elated but exhausted. Medical disclaimer must be signed.

    Weather

These yachts are built to withstand all weathers and the experience will only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions.

    Duration

Your experience lasts for four and a half hours. Please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure a prompt start, as the yachts cannot wait for latecomers.

    Numbers On Day

There will be two crew members and up to 12 guests on board.

    Spectators

Friends and family are welcome to watch from the shore, but they won't be able to see much of the action. Gunwharf quay in Portsmouth has lots of harbourside shops and restaurants and is only a short ferry ride away.

    Dress Code

Dress comfortably and bring an extra sweater or fleece as it is colder at sea. Wear soft-soled, non-slip shoes, e.g. deck shoes or trainers (as your feet are likely to get wet). Lipbalm and sunblock are useful. Waterproof and lifejackets are provided.

    Other Info

The crew are highly professional and well aware of the hard work involved so don't worry - you will be well looked after. Plenty of soft drinks are available to keep your energy levels high. Next of kin details will be required.

A half day on the wonderful clippers yacht was fantastic. Staff were professional and made it fun. They gave us tasks to do so teams became competitive at the same time. Learn't about the Clipper round the world yacht race and what they have to do. Something I would love to do!! Who knows!! Thank you Red Letter Days!

Excellent - Really Enjoyed The Experience!

Very well organised day, knowledgable and friendly crew who gave everybody the chance to experience the equipment on board and for a novice, like myself, they made the day unforgettable.

This is a great day out, whether you are a complete novice or have been sailing for some years. As an experienced sailor I found this a very enjoyable experience, and it was great to have the opportunity to do some big boat sailing. I would definitely recommend this Red Letter Days experience!

It was an excellent day, the sun shone and the wind blew, we had a chance to have a go at hoisting sails and skippering the boat and pulling lots ropes. It seemed at times the crew were talking a different languange but all very friendly and helped you if you needed it translated into pigeon english. Excellent day, would love to do it again,

What a fantastic day sailing a world class clipper yacht. I was a complete novice but the friendly, professional crew soon put me at my ease and it was not long before I was part of the crew sailing the yacht. What an experience!

It was the perfect weather for a day out on the water - sunshine, blue skies and some decent wind. The skipper and his mates were very friendly, professional and entertaining. I think everyone had a fantastic day and I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Highly recommended.

    Really Unique Experience

I am really interested in sailing and do a bit at weekends, but this was a totally knew experience on a completely different scale from what I am used to. It has given me the 'bug' for going clipper racing on the round the world races - one day I hope to do this.

    What A Fantastic Day!

We had a excellent day on the Clipper, which was made special by the superb weather conditions - warm, sunny with a good breeze. The skipper, Ollie was great and so were the rest of the crew. There was plenty to learn and everyone mucked in. We tacked our way towards Cowes and saw a number of yacht races en route. Plenty to see in the Solent. I would recommend this experience to anyone with a sense of adventure.

I had a fantastic day and one that I will remember for a long time. The boat was exactly as pictured. The crew (Ollie (Skipper) and Al were really friendly, helpful and vastly experienced, which was reassuring! The other guests were a good mix of gender, age and lifestyle and we all gelled well. Ollie and Al made sure that we each had a turn at all of the tasks and that no one missed out on anything they wanted to try. They pointed out landmarks, explained the instruments and kept us entertained with anecdotes of their sailing experiences. The weather was warm and sunny and the stiff breeze kept us sailing along at a good pace. There was excitement as the boat leaned to one side but never so much as to make the experience scary. My only tiny gripe was that with 12 guests and 2 crew members there were occasions when there was nowhere to stand/sit without being in someone's way. Nonetheless it was a wonderful experience and one that will stick in my memory for a long time.

Nice welcome, clear explanation of the yacht, felt welcomed aboard to enjoy the experience and able to do some hands on sailing including taking the helm which was really good and lucky with the wind. Thank you to our crew, very professional.

    Where Do I Sign Up?

I had sailed small dinghies before, but being set loose on a million pound racing yacht was something else! The Skipper and Crew were great, and encouraged (not forced) everyone to work as a team. Before long we were sailing the Solent with everyone manning their stations. The weather was superb, although I would personally have liked it to be a little more windy. Everyone was so enthusiastic, and we had a great morning of sailing. To think that next month that very boat, yes the very one I had sailed, would be setting sail in the 'Round the World Yacht Race'. I wish Chris and his Crew the very best of luck! Maybe with a little more practice, I'll be able to sign on for next year's race.

    Great Day Out!

Fantastic experience. The weather wasn't great but it didn't matter as the sailing was great fun. The skipper and crew were very knowledgable and good company as well as making sure we took part in the day, to the extent we wanted to. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Catriona N, 11 Jul 2009

Absolutely brilliant - the instructors on board with us were very patient and really got everyone involved in the whole experience - particularly impressive given the range of sailing experience on board (from keen amateur to total novice). Bad weather didn't spoil the sail at all (possibly even enhanced it!). Thank you!

    An Exhilarating Experience

    Mark T, 11 Jul 2009

A great opportunity to take part in an activity you rarely have the experience to participate in. I particuarly enjoyed the fact you were encouraged to take part under supervision with an emphasis on teamwork. A great afternoon on the water.

Unforgettable - I Recommend The Day To Anyone

    Colleen S, 23 May 2009

Professional sailors were excellent - very supportive, encouraging, enthusiastic - had total confidence in their judgement and got opportunities to do all sorts of things on the boat. It was a very physical day, and although I was not as strong as most people I did not feel for one minute out of place - I did not even think about it at the time - which tells its own story.

Earn Respect For People Who Sail Round The World

    Giles C, 23 May 2009

A fantastic experience where you get to sail and operate a real round the world racing boat. Examine the equipment on deck, manhandle a sail weighing 150kg, see the living and sleeping accommodation downstairs and speak with experienced skippers who have done it before. From this experience you will be able to decide if you have what it takes to sail around the world ... I don't!

A Great Day Out - And Great Weather!

    Jon R, 23 May 2009

Two experienced skippers from the upcoming round-the-world race looked after us brilliantly. They showed us the ropes (literally), and were always happy to answer the constant stream of questions about sailing around the globe on one of those boats! Great fun.
