  • About

Life during medieval times may have been grubby, brutal and plague-ridden, but they knew how to have fun. You'll start off with a riding assessment, an overview of the equipment and an introduction to the history of jousting. Then you'll take part in various activities on and off your horse, all originally rooted in learning the art of war, including neck reining and learning how to use a flag, lance and shield. Then practise with your lance on the formidable quintaine, a spinning target. After lunch you'll learn a choreographed fight sequence, including broad sword or quarterstaff fighting, before dressing in medieval costume and putting all you've learnt into action during a tournament. The day will end with the presentation of certificates.

    • Learn to joust and tilt at the spinning quintaine
    • Try fighting with a flag, lance and shield
    • Take part in the choreographed fight using quarterstaff or broadsword
    • Put everything you've learned into action in a medieval tournament
    • Now all you need is a dragon to slay

    Fantastic Day

    John S, 08 Oct 2011

From the moment I arrived the friendly and helpful staff made me feel welcome, and I felt that I was amongst friends. This continued through the day. It involved ALL members of the team that dealt with the events. Every activity was run on a professional and very fair basis, making sure that adequate time was given to everyone regardless of their abilities. I do not believe that anyone left without the opportunity to try every element of all the three elements ie the sword work, archery and of course the main section of jousting. The safety factors were alway evident and in place. The final Golden Gauntlet was encouraged, and run so that all who took part wanted their own team to win but cheered every effort in a sprirt of true camaraderie. This reflected the way we had all been taught and encouraged all day. Again I can only say that for my part I now feel to be a true Knight of Middle England.

    Excellent Day Out

What was not to like with this experience? You meet a great much of like minded people wanting to have some fun and charge around on a horse. The staff there were awesome and make you feel welcome and fully intergrated in the experience. It is a full action packed day of archery, sword fighting and the jousting. I would recommend this to anyone, even if they have never riden a horse in their lives.

    Simply Amazing

The venue was brilliant! The staff, sorry the Knights and Ladies of Middle England, were fabulous and looked after us all day with much merriment and laughter! A day never to be forgotten...

What a fantastic day, from dressing up in medieval clothes, to learning a fight scene with swords, to jousting a real knight on horses. I have never had so much fun on horseback and this was the same for myself as a rider and my husband who is a non rider. All levels of ability were catered for and everyone was encouraged to take part with the same level of support and praise. The Black Knight and all the other knights and squires were great fun, professional and played their characters well. I can't thank them enough for a brilliant day.

    My Champion Son Jousting

    Bridget P, 06 Aug 2010

A great day out for the family, My Son 16 was my champion knight for the day, my husband, parents & I watched while he successfully practiced archery, swordsmanship and jousting on a horse - one other knight (on his 60th birthday) was able to joust never having been on a horse before! The Audience were treated to a great display of jousting and at the end of the day cheering on our three teams of rookie knights it was thoroughily entertaining and my Son had a fantastic if tiring day - you do need to be fit as it is full on exercise all day for the knights. My son was so amazed when he was knighted and given a certificate. I would recomend this to anyone who is looking for something truely out of the ordinary.

    Simply Brilliant

The experience was a gift for my son but I wish I had done it as well. It was great fun for those who took part and for those who were spectators.

A great experience which provided not only the chance to joust, but also the chance to sword fight and shoot (archery). Well worth the travel from Reading, and would definitely love to go again! I have not ridden a great deal (a few times on holiday), and the instructors were very accommodating. Instructors were suitably good humoured!

    Best Day Ever!!

From start to finish we were non-stop engaged in chivalrous activity - either various jousting challenges on horseback or learning fight sequences on foot. The grand finale was a tournament, testing all skills learnt on the day, and a final joust against one of the knights (poor bloke)!!!

    Wonderful Memories

This was a fantastic experience. I purchased the day for my partner for his birthday, and he loved it! Such value for money and spectators become involved also, making it a good time for all. Would certainly recommend it for others. Incredibly funny watching my non-horse riding boyfriend on his first steps on a horse! Staff were very patient and even awarded him a mug for being best improved! Keen to try it myself!

A Knight For A Day: What Could Be Better?

    Paul B, 18 Jul 2009

Every boy has been a 'Robin Hood', a knight on Horseback and a swashbuckling swordsmith when growing up. This gives you a chance to revist those childhood playtimes but with real swords, bows and horses. What could be better?

    A Superb Knight's Tale

    Tristan P, 04 Oct 2008

For me what makes the jousting experience with the Knights of Middle England a superb day is the knights and squires themselves. They were always upbeat and funny - even in cold weather - and you could see that they were concerned equally about our safety and our enjoyment. The way in which they coped with different standards of riders and sword fighters was excellent. They also kept the spectators warmed with tea and entertained whilst we learnt the basics. All in all an even better day than I imagined. Well worth the plane trip from Ireland.

    Haven't Stopped Smiling

I haven't stopped smiling in 3 days. My thanks to the staff on the day for taking care of everyone from the complete novice riders to us with some riding experience. I thought we would only walk and perhaps trot at the targets, but I was allowed to canter right from the outset. Thanks again!

    Fantastic Experience!!

I had a great day learning how to be a knight! The guys in charge were fantastic - a great bunch who really looked after everyone, making sure we all knew what we were doing and in a lovely friendly atmosphere. I'd never even got onto a horse before but by the end of the afternoon I was up to a trot and jousting! The sword play was fun too!! Have a go, you'll have a brilliant day.

    Great Day Out

The experience was 'exactly what it said on the tin', a fun packed day for the jouster and a great day out for the spectators. Recommend the experience and highly recommend bringing the family/friends along too. Thanks.

All joining instructions received promptly, with a good description of what the day was about. The jousting day itself was brilliant.
