  • About

This experience lets you fly like a bird. After a full briefing, your BHPA-qualified instructor will introduce you to the tandem glider: a rigid-winged ATOS VX, specifically designed for tandem flight and one of the best gliders in the world. Once secured in the harness, you and your instructor will be towed into the air behind a microlight tug. At a height of around 2,000ft the rope is released, the microlight pulls away and you're free to soar and circle lazily in the thermal currents above the beautiful Essex countryside, with incredible views of the earth and the sky. One-day membership of the BHPA (British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association) is also included.

    • Towed to around 2,000 feet by microlight
    • Hang glide above the Thames valley, strapped securely to an instructor
    • Incredible views of the earth and the sky as you soar on the thermals
    • Includes full safety briefing and all equipment
  • Key Info

    Availability

Up to twice a week throughout the main flying season (May to December). Please note that weekends are particularly busy and we recommend booking several weeks in advance. Week night flights take off in summer until 7.30pm.

    Participant Guidelines

Minimum age is 16. Maximum weight is 13 and a half stone, fully-clothed. You need to be reasonably fit. Anyone over 40 will need to complete a medical declaration form before taking part.

    Weather

Flights are weather dependent. You MUST call for confirmation on the day of your flight, between 7.30am - 8am for AM flights or 9am - 10am for PM flights. Any cancellations are rebooked.

    Duration

The length of your flight depends entirely on the prevailing thermal currents (the warmer air that provides the lift). As a guide, your flight can last between 15 and 25 minutes, depending on thermals and wind. Please allow at least 2 hours at the venue.

    Numbers On Day

Your briefing might be shared; your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with the instructor.

    Spectators

Spectators are welcome to watch you take off and land, dont let them forget to bring a camera or pair of binoculars. They can relax in the cafe and viewing area on the airfield. Sorry, dogs are not permitted at airfields.

    Dress Code

Wear closed in flat-soled shoes and bring a jumper with you in case it's cold at higher altitudes. Bring gloves in winter and sunblock and a hat in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round. All other equipment will be provided on the day.

    Other Info

You'll be asked to sign a form to confirm that you are fit, have not drunk alcohol and agree to comply with all operational rules and instructions.

It was fantastic and high. Everything went well. I would like to hold the bar, instead of hold around instructor, to make me feel that I'm one of two especally with camera for DVD. (Not to control but just hold the bar). I suppose for safety reasons.

    The Best Birthday Present Ever!

I've always wanted to hang-glide and was lucky enough to be treated to this experience by my boyfriend for my birthday. He could not have picked a better present - I had an absolutely fantastic time - the thrill of being in the air is something I had real difficulty putting into words once I had my feet back on the ground. I could have stayed in the air all the day, it was so calming and peaceful. I would recommend this to anybody, it certainly cured my fear of heights! Ian, Anna and Steve deserve a very big thank you as they made the day perfect by being so friendly and great fun to be with. Thank you.

    Couldn't Have Been Better

The tandem hang gliding could not have gone better with no waiting around. The briefing was quick but efficient, then straight into the air on the glider with some fantastic views for approx 20 mins, then back down to earth with the smoothest of landings.

Turning 50 made me promise myself I'd take on 50 challenges, my family started me off with Red Letter Day vouchers and hang gliding proved to be truly amazing! Flying like a bird, wind in my face, able to see for miles - awesome!

    Great Day

The hang gliding experience was fab - not as adrenaline soaked as I would have expected ... actually quite relaxing! I have always wanted to soar like a bird of prey and now I have!
