Get your young competitive spirit going with yacht racing - combining the freedom of the open water with the thrill of racing and the satisfaction of hands-on involvement. You'll be on board a modern Sigma 8 metre keelboat which is a really good, manoeuvrable boat. First you'll meet your instructor and fellow crew members where you will get kitted out, then head out to the yachts for a safety briefing. Training includes hoisting sails, helming and practising the most efficient methods of manoeuvring the yacht. Next off you'll be briefed on the rules of the race which takes place on a floating 'race track'. And it's all hands on deck for that - you'll participate fully in crewing the yacht during the race, putting into action everything that you've learned so far. Afterwards (tired but happy we predict), you'll return to the clubhouse for race results and signing off the logbooks (for those who have been bitten by the bug and want to take their sailing a little further).

Participant Guidelines: Minimum age is 11 and maximum is 16. Maximum weight 16 stone. You don't need any previous sailing experience or to be a swimmer, but do need to be reasonably fit and physically able to move easily around the boat - this event is pretty active!
Weather: Sailing is a weather dependent activity and strong winds or rough seas will have an impact on the day. It's vital that you call the venue the day before your booking to confirm conditions and go ahead.
Duration: Your experience runs for approximately three hours. The actual race normally lasts around 20 minutes, depending on conditions. Please arrive in good time (ideally few minutes in advance).
Numbers On Day: Up to 10 people take part and share your experience, with five people and an instructor on each of the two boats.
Spectators: Spectators are welcome to come down to the pontoon and wave you off. The race can be viewed from the breakwater or the beach.
Dress Code: Dress warmly and wear flat, soft and light-soled, non-marking shoes, eg deck shoes or trainers. We recommend lots of layers, even in summer it can get cold out at sea. Bring an anorak and sun protection. Life-jackets and sailing gear is provided.
Availability: Selected week or weekend dates from April to September. We recommend early booking for this popular experience.
