  • About

Gliding is perhaps the most elegant way that humans can get airborne. It's a breathtaking way to fly, soaring on the same rising currents of air that the birds use. You'll start with a briefing session so that you'll know what to expect, before climbing aboard your dual-controlled glider with your expert instructor. Then the glider is towed into the air by a light aircraft and once you're at a height of around 2,000ft, the rope is released, the aircraft peels away and you're free to soar and circle lazily in the thermal currents. You'll enjoy breathtaking views of the countryside below you and the sky around you. And - at the pilot's discretion - you might be able to take the controls and trying controlling the glider yourself.

    • You're towed into the air by a light aircraft then released at 2,000ft
    • With expert instruction from your qualified pilot, use the thermal currents to circle upwards
    • Take the controls of the glider (at your pilot's discretion)
  • Key Info

    Availability

The summer flying season (around April to September) runs Monday to Friday. The winter season runs from 1 October to 30 April and during this time flights take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

    Participant Guidelines

Minimum age is 14. Under 18s need written parental consent. Maximum height is 6'4''. Maximum weight is 16 stone. You can't fly if you suffer from epilepsy, fainting or certain other physical or mental disabilities - check when booking.

    Weather

Gliding is weather dependent. It is crucial that you call the venue after 9am for a weather check before setting out. If your flight is cancelled due to the weather it will be re-booked for an alternative date or time.

    Duration

The length of glider flights depends entirely on the prevailing thermals (currents of warmer air that provide the lift). As a guide your aerotow flight should last for between 12 and 20 minutes.

    Numbers On Day

Your briefing might be shared, your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with the instructor.

    Spectators

Spectators are welcome. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy. For safety reasons children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

    Dress Code

Dress comfortably in warm, waterproof clothes, wear a hat (no baseball caps or wide-brimmed hats please) and long trousers. Bring gloves in winter and sunblock in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.

    Other Info

The venue operates as a non-profit-making club and you may be asked to help others launch and retrieve their gliders while you wait your turn to glide.

Very helpful people, a super flight and great experience. Pity I don't live closer to the airfield or I would go again.

Always Wanted To Fly And I Now Have

Out of all the Red Letter Day options I picked the Aerotow Gliding Flight. It so happens the airfield is a short walk from my house and I always wondered what it would be like to go up in one of those gliders. The guys down at Bicester Gliding were really friendly and only too helpful. The flight took about 20 minutes in total and would have loved for it to last longer. It was a clear blue sky day so lots of visibility and my pilot George was very friendly and even let me take over the controls for a few minutes. I loved every minute of it and even got a guided tour of the hanger at the end to see the other gliders and planes. 5 stars well deserved and a great day, one that I will remember for a long time.

Brilliant use of 25 minutes of my time. First time probably won't be the last. Loved every element of the flight and yes I did fly it myself - what a wonderful experience.

Had a fantastic experience at Windrushers Aero Club, Bicester. well worth the journey down from Yorkshire. Everyone was really helpful and friendly which made the day even better. I had a running comentary from Mark the pilot all through the flight and was even given the chance to take control. Never having done anything like this before (execpt for a hot air balloon flight through Red Letter Days) I was a bit nervous to say the least especially when fitting the parachute, but no worries everything went like clockwork. Recommend trying to pick a hot or warm day to take advantage of the thermals and I don't mean long johns. Fantastic experience.

    Fantastic Morning! Really Enjoyable.

Had a trial gliding flight more than 20 years ago. Increased safety procedures (and age!) made me more nervous this time but everyone at the Gliding Club was friendly and helpful. Great instructor removed any remaining nerves, gave me a fantastic flight and a day I will never forget. Thanks to all involved!
