  • About

A trip on one of these nippy, lightweight little microlights is about as close as it gets to being a bird. It's a thrilling experience which requires steady nerves and a head for heights! Start with a short briefing from a qualified instructor, before hopping into a dual-controlled microlight. There are two types of microlight: 'flex wing', based on the frame of a hang glider; or 'fixed wing', which is similar to a traditional light aircraft. Get immersed in the speed and manoeuvrability of this little craft, and during the flight, the instructor will hand over the controls. If you get a taste for it, the flying time can count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence.

    • An exhilarating flight in a microlight - speed, manoeuvrability and breathtaking views
    • Expert instruction from your qualified pilot
    • Take the controls of the microlight (at the pilot's discretion)
    • Can contribute towards flying time for a Private Pilot's Licence for microlights
  • Key Info

    Availability

Operational dates vary, the Lincolnshire venue usually offers selected weekend dates and in Scotland flights operate everyday.

    Participant Guidelines

Maximum weight is 17 stone and minimum age is 12-16 (dependant on venue). Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who'll be required to sign a disclaimer. Women in either the first or the last three months of pregnancy can't fly.

    Weather

Microlighting is a weather dependent activity and it is crucial that you call the venue for a weather check before setting out. If your flight is cancelled because of the weather, it will be re-booked for an alternative date or time.

    Duration

Your flight will last for around 60 minutes.

    Numbers On Day

Your briefing might be shared, but your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with a qualified pilot.

    Spectators

Spectators are welcome to come along and watch you take off and land. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy.

    Dress Code

Most microlights have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Bring sunblock in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.

    Other Info

Your flying time can count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence, for which you need 15 hours of dual control and 10 hours solo flying to qualify. Please be aware that this is quite a high adrenaline experience, not for the faint hearted.

Most Exhilarating And Relaxful Day Of My Life

It might be a bit bumpy until we get up above it. The pilot said as we headed to our departure point on the tarmac. Thus began an absolutely brilliant hour soaring and swooping over Scone, Kinross and Balado Airfield. The pilot had asked if there was anything I wanted to see in particular. Loch Leven I replied and minutes later there we were swooping over a Loch I had fished many times, but his view of the loch was spectacular. The flight was full of interesting anecdotes from the pilot and I felt totally secure with this man at the helm for want of a better description. All in all a wonderful experience, so much so that I want my two sons to experience it.

    What A Rush!

I had a fabulous time at Wickenby Airfield from the minute I arrived. Even as a local chap I had no idea this gem of a place for just a day out exisited. For those Lancaster lovers out there there is a small museum upstairs in the control tower which is very interesting. My instructor was Malcolm, a very nice chap who made you feel very at ease and did all he could to make sure you got everything you wanted out of the time you were there. Luckily for me the weather was a beautiful sunny and no wind day so the experience was amazing. After some basic checks we took off and even flew over my house a few times! I would definitely recommend the day to anyone who loves flying. All in all a great day!!

    A Unique Experience

A fantastic day, and got good weather too. Was able to take control of the aircraft for at least 75% of the time, with the opportunity of flying all the way to the coast seeing Maplethorpe and Skegness, an amazing experience! One I would definitely love to do again.

Firstly being suited, helmeted and strapped into the 'flex wing' behind the pilot, we did pre-flight checks. Minutes later, a five second acceleration to 40+ mph and we were airborne, climbing like a bat out of hell. The excitement was immediate and astonishing, the views spectacular and the rush of air and adrenalin fantastic. We soared over the airfield and headed South, people becoming pin-pricks, cars soon after. We reached an altitude of 1500 feet, levelled out and then I got to steer. We headed back to the airport, landed fabulously, taxied to a field, and within the minute I was in the driving seat! For the second time, up we went, this time I had to steer, control the pitch and worry about other controls too! Thankfully a duplicate set was right there behind me with the pilot. A couple of manoeuvres later we were heading off West, soon after banking again to find the airport in the distance. Final approach reached all too soon and we were down. What joy!

A Really Great Day, An Excellent Experience

A microlight flight was something that I had fancied doing for quite a while and my wife organised this as a suprise for my 50th birthday. If I could have put my head on back to front I might have flown it better - it all seemed back to front!

    A Superb Trip

The weather was bright but showery with strong winds and Ian the microlight pilot was concerned about the possible effect of the bumpy flying conditions on my stomach. Considering that I would be sitting directly behind him, one can understand his apprehension. However my stomach proved equal to the challenge, and the clear air causing bumpy conditions also led to superb visibility. As we flew out over the Thames estuary we could see for many miles in every direction, from the skyscrapers of London to the windfarm in the estuary. In an open microlight you are much more part of the atmosphere than when peering through the limlted porthole of a jet airliner.

    Wow!!!!!

Great day out, the pilot knew what he was doing, even though it was windy we went up and had a great flight and safe landing!!! I am now pursuing further training in my area to be able to fly, wouldn't that be cool! Many thanks to all the staff on the ground - brilliant organisation.
