Introduction to Steam Engine Driving
A perfect gift for any steam train enthusiast! Beginning at Alresford station, receive a detailed safety briefing from a qualified instructor who also provides important information on the line and signalling. Climb aboard this magnificent machine (without coaches or passengers) and learn all about driving controls, firing techniques and other exciting operational skills. Travelling a 20 mile return journey, take turns in both driving and firing the engine to experience the thrills and spills of steam engine driving first-hand. An unforgettable experience!

Weekdays from March - July and September - October. Book at least three months in advance.
- Participant Guidelines
Minimum age is 18. No experience is necessary but you must be fit enough to climb up to the footplate from ground level. Mobility needs must be stated when booking.
The weather should not affect this experience but if conditions are extreme, please contact the station before leaving home.
Lasts for up to three hours, with approximately one and a half hours on the footplate.
- Numbers on the Day
Share the experience with two other participants and take turns driving and firing the locomotive.
- Dress Code
Stout footwear and a cotton overall or boilersuit must be worn. Trainers are not acceptable. Dress comfortably in clothing that fully covers the arms and legs.

All participants receive a voucher for one day train travel over the whole Mid Hants Railway (valid for 12 months).
