  • About

The planes that most of us travel in are so big you hardly even know that you're in the air. Well, things couldn't be more different flying in a microlight. In fact, a trip on one of these nippy, lightweight little flying machines is about as close as you can get to being a bird. It's an exhilarating experience - and one which needs strong nerves and a real head for heights! You'll start off with a short briefing from your instructor, before hopping into your microlight. There are two types of microlight: 'flex wing', based on the frame of a hang glider; or 'fixed wing', which is similar to a conventional light aircraft. They all have dual controls, so you're in safe hands at all times. You'll be impressed by the speed and manoeuvrability of this little craft, and your instructor will encourage you to have a go at the controls yourself (we don't reckon you'll need much encouragement). If you get a taste for it, your flying time can count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence.

    • An exhilarating flight in a microlight - speed, manoeuvrability and breathtaking views
    • Expert instruction from your qualified pilot
    • Take the controls of the microlight (at your pilot's discretion)
    • Can contribute towards flying time for a private pilot's licence for microlights
  • Key Info

    Availability

Operational dates vary but generally each venue runs every weekend and some weekdays during the summer months and up to three dates a month (weekends and weekdays) throughout the rest of the year.

    Participant Guidelines

Maximum weight is 14 to 16 stone and minimum age is 10 to 16, depending on venue. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who'll be required to sign a disclaimer.

    Weather

Microlighting is a weather dependent activity and it is crucial that you call the venue for a weather check before setting out. If your flight is cancelled because of the weather, it will be re-booked for an alternative date or time.

    Duration

Your flight will last for 20 to 30 minutes.

    Numbers On Day

Your briefing might be shared, but your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with a qualified pilot.

    Spectators

Spectators are welcome to come along and watch you take off and land. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy.

    Dress Code

Most microlights have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Bring sunblock in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.

    Other Info

Your flying time can count towards a microlight private pilot's licence, for which you need 15 hours of dual control and 10 hours solo flying to qualify. Please be aware that this is quite a high adrenaline experience, not for the faint-hearted.

Bill was so reasuring and gave me bags of confidence. This was on my list of things to do as i am frightened of heights. I thought it was great and would do it again. Every aspect of my flight was very professional yet relaxed and fun you must try it.

Everything went very smoothly with the instructor being so relaxed and the day was made even better by the lovely sunny weather with clear skies and wonderful views of the local area.

Wasn't sure I was going to get up, as I am a bit on the large side! They were going to weigh me, but couldn't find their scales. The rate of climb was amazing, comparing well to that of a winch-launched glider. It was a rather blustery day, but Ian the Instructor still allowed me to have a go at controlling the aircraft. Its definitely something I would like to try again, although I'm not sure I would ever be good enough to go solo - like I have with rigid gliders.

Having experienced many forms of flying; gliding, balloning as well as conventional planes this Microlight experince was in a league of it's own! The feeling of being at 1,800ft with only a piece a fabric above your head and a small piece of fibreglass under you was absolutely mind-blowing. Although I felt a real sense of vunerability at the start of the flight. This soon past as the stunning 360 degree vista unfolded before me as we climbed higher & higher. Ian, my instructor pilot, was outstanding and answered all of the questions I was asking him during the flight. His skill as a pilot was obvious but this was matched by his ability to communicate in a reassuring informative manner. Flying very close to the QE2 bridge over the Thames estuary at Dartford was truly the highlight of the flight followed very closely by the Touch & Go manouvre he undertook towards the end of the flight - a real adrenaline rush! What ever you do DON'T MISS THIS EXPERIENCE

There was a lot of waiting and I had to ask the pilot of I could hold the controls. But the experience was amazing.

    Flight Over Lincolnshire

An unforgetable trip over Lincolnshire where we climbed to a hight that let us see the whole of Lincolnshire from the Wash to the Humber and Nottinghamshire to the sea. No sooner had we taken of than the very experienced instructor let me take the controls which I only handed back just before landing. This was an adrenaline fuelled trip to remember and one which I will most certainly take again.

Warm sunshine, a friendly welcome from Learn to Fly staff at the tiny airfield in Upminster, and the relaxed atmosphere all helped to make my Microlight flight really memorable and exciting. The take off and landing were really exciting - felt like a big bird zooming up into the blue and the viz was superb! I could talk to Ian via an in-helmet mask and we soared to at least 1,000 feet or more, so had a wonderful bird's eye view of the countryside - a living map below. The thermals were strong and we dipped and dived quite a lot, but I loved it! (Was a sucker for the Big Dipper as a kid!) I could see the white curve of the Dome in the distance in the curve of the Thames, and was very sorry when it was time to turn back to the airfield. The ground loomed up fast, but Ian made a skilful landing and I was back on terra firma, happy and wanting to have another flight soon! My grandchildren who were watching were pretty envious .... Thank you, Red Letter Days, for a great experience.

A truly memorable day right from when I arrived at the airfield. The crew were very welcoming and attentive to my party and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The pilot was informative and forthcoming on the procedures before and during the flight. Even though the flight was quite bumpy due to wind I felt I had complete confidence in his ability. Following the flight, I ordered a DVD and certificate, unfortunately there had been a problem with the camera so only part of the flight was filmed. Because of this,Learn to Fly made a short version as best they could and forwarded to me but also refunded my money which I thought was a really nice gesture. I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who wanted a different type of air experience. Thank you Red Letter Day for sourcing such a superb company.

Clearly nervous and wondering why, oh why, I had booked myself (yes, booked it myself!) such a terrifying experience, upon arrival at the airfield I could not have been more welcomed or reassured. My microlight flight was truly exhilerating, awesome and Ian, my pilot, was inspiring, calm, professional and good fun. I cannot recommend this experience enough and urge anyone looking for the most amazing time to treat themselves immediately!

    Out Of This World

This was the perfect experience. Something I had wanted to do since childhood. The team really look after you and make you feel warm and welcome, and even offer you tea and coffee. The event itself was out of this world, and I can't do it enough justice in words. You can see other distant cities, landmarks and civilisation going about its business, all from a bird's eye view. Taking control of the aircraft was exhilarating and nerve wracking as well, but I'd recommend this to anyone as a MUST. You won't regret it.
