Flying a microlight is an exhilarating experience - and one which needs strong nerves and a real head for heights! Begin with a short briefing from a qualified instructor, before hopping into a microlight. There are two types of microlight (both dual-controlled) - 'flex wing' - based on the frame of a hang glider; or 'fixed wing' - similar to a conventional light aircraft. Once airborne, experience the incredible speed and manoeuvrability of these little craft, with the instructor on hand to offer guidance and encouragement to participants to take over the controls and assume the role of honorary pilot. This flight time can also count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence.
Operational dates vary but generally venues run every weekend and some weekdays during the summer months and up to three dates a month (weekends and weekdays) throughout the rest of the year, with the exception of Hampshire which operatates seven days a week (excluding 24, 25 and 26 Dec).
Maximum weight is 14 to 17 stone and minimum age is 14 to 16, depending on venue. Under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who'll be required to sign a disclaimer.
Microlighting is a weather dependent activity and it is crucial that you call the venue for a weather check before setting out. If your flight is cancelled because of the weather, it will be re-booked for an alternative date or time.
Your flight will last for 20 to 30 minutes.
Your briefing might be shared, but your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with a qualified pilot.
Spectators are welcome to come along and watch you take off and land. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy.
Most microlights have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.
Your flying time can count towards a microlight private pilot's licence, for which you need 15 hours of dual control and 10 hours solo flying to qualify. Please be aware that this is quite a high adrenaline experience, not for the faint-hearted.
I very much enjoyed the experience. The only down side was the long, potholed, muddy track down to the airfield.
A very exilerating experience, with a very friendly pilot. However if I were to do this again I would opt for the microlight without the canopy for that open air feel.
What a fantastic day...Mark the pilot at Flight 365 was great, explaining what was going on,local land sites and a bit of history of the area as well....I even had a go....Would recommend to all...Thanks
We chose the venue in Lincolnshire as we could visit the grandchildren at the same time. Lovely little airfield with a small cafe doing burgers toasties etc. Very enjoyable day and well organised.
Had a flight at bedford microlight centre. What a lovely venue. Such pleasant knowledgeable staff, owners are really welcoming and will do anything to help. Had a really great day.
Bought the experience for my father and he had an experience he will never forget. He opted for an enclosed cockpit and really loved it.
I must admit I was more than a little apprehensive at the prospect of my long awaited Microlight Flight - kindly arranged for me by my Wife! However, I was immediately put at ease by my friendly Instructor who had a Devilish sense of humour (my Wife found him hilarious). I climbed into my Spaceman like protective suit and boarded the Microlight. We soared up to the clouds in no time and I soon realised I had nothing to fear and I felt relaxed and looked around as we flew over some of the areas landmarks such as Bolsover Castle and the Craggs of Nottinghamshire/South Yorkshire. A nice addition to the package was the chance to purchase a souvenir DVD - an offer I happily accepted - as I may never have another opportunity to do this again. I thought to ask some apt questions whilst in the air such as the height we had reached, the speed we were travelling at and the weather conditions. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would readily do it again should I be given the chance.
I arranged the day for my grandson who is 14 years of age. We received a warm welcome by the pilot who accommodated us throughout the experience in a very informative and friendly manner. Although we were late arriving at the airfield due to unexpected traffic problems it did not detract from the experience from the pilot. My grandson thoroughly enjoyed the day and I cannot compliment the pilot and experience highly enough. Thank you.
The booking process was really simple with Red Letter Days, contact was good and when I had a minor query it was dealt within within 10 minutes. Could not have received better service from Red Letter Days. Even after the sale had taken place I had a reminder about my booked experience. The microflight experience was a present for my husband. From arriving at Wickenby Airfield to leaving it was a fantastic day. My husband had nothing but praise for his pilot giving him an experience he will never forget, The pilot himself was very informative and knowledgable. Wickenby airfield is a lovely place with a lovely cafe with home made food and the best coffee. A very welcoming environment - will certainly be visiting again. The only problem was it was over much too quickly as it was so enjoyable. Thank you
Amazing experience, flying so free
What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Good instruction, very safe and exhilarating. Considering taking it up as a sport
First class instructor. very helpful and soon had me at the controls which added to the overall experience. All safety aspects dealt with very professionally.
Staff at the venue and the location were all very good, would have preferred a conventional microlight but still hugely enjoyed the flight. Many thanks to Red Letter Days for arranging it all.
An unforgettable experience with 1st class service all the way. This is truly a gift that will stick with me forever.
Bill was so reasuring and gave me bags of confidence. This was on my list of things to do as i am frightened of heights. I thought it was great and would do it again. Every aspect of my flight was very professional yet relaxed and fun you must try it.
An excellent experience and one I would recommend to anyone thinking of buying a gift for someone interested in microlight aviaition.
An unforgetable trip over Lincolnshire where we climbed to a hight that let us see the whole of Lincolnshire from the Wash to the Humber and Nottinghamshire to the sea. No sooner had we taken of than the very experienced instructor let me take the controls which I only handed back just before landing. This was an adrenaline fuelled trip to remember and one which I will most certainly take again.
Very friendly people, lovely place.
I was a little nervous about the microlight flight but it was superb. Instructor put me at ease and I had the controls the majority of the flight. Gives you a real buzz - fantastic.
