What could be more quintessentially British than a delicious afternoon tea served in charming surroundings? Give in to tea and cake cravings at one of a range of hand-picked venues, including charming hotel restaurants and lounges. What's included will vary according to the location chosen - for example be served a traditional English cream tea, a tea with finger sandwiches and homemade cakes, fancy pastries and champagne, or cakes and cocktails, and some venues offer the experience for more than two people. Whichever it is, find the perfect spot to relax on any occasion from Mother's Day to 40th birthday celebrations, and indulge and while away an afternoon. Tuck in!
Bookings are offered seven days a week at most venues (bear in mind that hotel venues can be much busier during summer months).
Everyone is welcome, but at least one guest must be an adult (18 or over).
Tea is served in the afternoon, usually between 11am and 6pm.
The majority of venues offer this experience for two people, although there are options included within our range for three and for four.
Most hotels request smart casual dress.
I had booked a table for 4 for 3.30pm. I had a Red Letter day voucher for two but had invited two relatives to join us. When we arrived there was no table reserved and we were told to wait in another room. Nobody came, so after 15 minutes I hunted down the member of staff who was very busy trying to see to afternoon tea customers and serve at the bar at the same time.
I asked if we could go back into the lounge bar as a table had been vacated, which we did. Still no member of staff came to greet us, give us a menu or even apologise for keeping us waiting.
By 4pm I was getting very annoyed and went to the bar. Another member of staff had appeared. I complained that we had waited half an hour and no-one had acknowledged our presence. I told her we had been ignored and the service was just not good enough.
This seemed to do the trick and someone came to serve us but it was 4.30pm before we eventually got our food served to us.
The food was average; not as good as I would expect from such a well-known establishment and for the price which they charge.
At the end of the afternoon they apologised and said that the extra two afternoon teas would not be charged for.
This helped a little, but the experience was spoilt because I had become annoyed by the lack of service and embarrassed because I had invited others to join us to make it a memorable occasion. It was, but for the wrong reasons!
We certainly won't be going to the Old Swan Hotel again.
We were given a treat for two afternoon teas. One sunny day in May we woke and decided to use it. It was simple to arrange for later that day, the receptionist at Grinkle Park was pleasant and efficient, and also the contact at Red Letter Days who arranged the confirmation email. All went according to plan and the tea lived up to expectations. Lovely food, plenty of it, and a pleasant wander round the grounds after to walk it off!
We had a lovely afternoon cream tea Excellent quality food and Tea with 2 glasses of "Fizz" at the Cottonwood Boutique Hotel in Bournemouth. Very good price too
Hotel in a lovely area, first time we had been to the garden that Albert had arranged for Victoria in Kensington Gardens & it was lovely to sit in the sun there as we were early.
The sandwiches & scones were fresh & tasty. The cakes were just the right size but unfortunately rather stale.
The table linen was good quality, but my tea pot & milk jug were chipped
The variety of teas were excellent & when we asked for more hot water, fresh pots of tea were brought. Also it was lovely to get the unexpected glass of fizzy white wine
The Service was excellent, unobtrusive, but very efficient
Very good value. Food was good, plenty of it and varied.
The afternoon tea was ok,however I have had better!
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea, with all the trimmings, in the dining room of the Hallmark Hotel, Bournemouth West Cliff. The service was excellent and staff very helpful and friendly in their manner. A very enjoyable afternoon. Thank you Hallmark Hotel.
Very dissapointed, no atmosphere. Seated in bar
Cloth didn't fit table, chipped dish, chunky tea cups, sandwiches very nice, scones and cakes, looked shop bought. Staff were very nice. This
Was a birthday treat from our daughter.
My partner and I enjoyed an afternoon tea for our anniversary. The service was prompt and friendly. The food didn't didn't blow us away, but it was still enjoyable. The scones, however, were amazing!
I booked the afternoon tea experience for my mother and her friend, well they cannot sing its praises enough. The staff were friendly and helpful. The tea itself was delicious and more than enough. Best scones they had ever tasted and lots of clotted cream and jam. Sandwiches were fresh and fabulous selection. To top it all off a glass of bubbly and a spectacular view from the dining room. Highly recommended.
Nice place with good service, tea weak & in thick glass mugs not china cups. Cakes & sandwiches nice but few, The scones were undercooked & like dough in the centre, very small portions of jam & cream, jam poor quality, more like jelly. Having said this we did eat most of it. Sorry just disappointing.
I took my friend to Farringdon Lodge Hotel as a Birthday treat and it was excellent from start to finish. We were shown into a beautiful room which was set aside for afternoon teas with crisp white tablecloths and napkins on the tables. The tables were in plenty of space rather than crowded.
We were asked which sort of sandwiches we would like from an adequate selection on the menu and while they were freshly prepared we were offered tea and coffee. We enjoyed this as well as the view of the lovely gardens from the window. Our afternoon tea soon arrived on a three-tier china cake-stand - 6 finger sandwiches each which were thick with filling, three dainty cakes each plus a scone, jam and cream. More than adequate! Also more tea whenever we wanted it. It was a very relaxing afternoon in an elegant setting.
It was very traditional which I prefer to all the latest gimmicks which are offered these days at other establishments. Also nice to be offered choice of sandwiches. Also I prefer a separate room for afternoon teas rather than cooked meals being served in the same room.
Altogether very satisfactory
Delicious cute sandwiches, wonderful scones and beautiful surroundings. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Attentive friendly staff. Thank you Hatton Court Hotel :)
This hotel was situated in what seemed the middle of nowhere in the New Forest at Burley. The hotel was beautifully presented inside and we were led to a room over looking the garden. A good selection of sandwiches and cake were presented with Champagne and earl grey tea to wash them down. The staff were attentive but not pressing-great.
A treat for my birthday afternoon tea, the food was lovely and the choice of tea fantastic, the young man who served us was very nice and when we had a pot of tea each with the food he went away and said he would be back, the downside we never saw him again, we had to go and find someone to get more tea, nobody asked if we were ok, such a shame, as the place was nice and the food good, after service was rubbish, because it was quiet we felt we were just ignored.
I think the red letter day high tea is a bit expensive for what you get for 2 people.
I only paid an extra £10 to include a 3rd guest and got exactly the same for them as I got with the voucher for the red letter day . Never again its more cost effective to book direct with the hotel
Very disappointing. pine table, stainless steel tea pot, thick coffee cups from the bar. no table cloth. Paper napkins, plastic ham, dry fruit cake, won't be recommending hallmark hotels at all, wished we'd chosen a different venue. You can only have the china and tables cloths if you if grade to £25 per head. For £36 you slump it in a corner on a pine table.
This was afternoon tea as you wouldn't know it!! First we had choice of sitting in the bar with a large screen TV that was showing football or sitting in the cold reception area that was very noisy. This in itself was off putting as the experience is advertised as taking your seat in the hospitable dining room! The food that was served was rather large sandwiches on a bed of salad covered in a dubious dressing, followed by warm pastry items that didn't taste too nice followed by very soggy scones and a couple of pieces of cake!! This had been a Christmas present for us and we had saved it for our wedding anniversary but unfortunately were a bit disappointed in it.
So disappointed with my very first Red Letter Experience. Would not recommend any body i know to buy this as a gift.
