We visited for my 16-year anniversary and birthday. Unfortunately, our experience wasn’t quite what we had hoped for.
When we arrived, there was a wedding taking place, so the staff were understandably busy. However, the atmosphere at reception wasn’t the most welcoming, as we were greeted by some rather inappropriate conversations from wedding guests, which immediately dampened the mood.
We had to wait a little while to be shown to our seats and were told “sorry, we’re busy,” which we understood, but it did set the tone for the rest of the visit. Before we even had a chance to look at the drinks menu, we were asked straight away if we wanted tea or coffee.(I was expecting loose tea and other tea) I had mentioned that our booking included bubbles, but this was overlooked at first. I also struggled to find the ladies’ bathroom after being directed there and ended up having to use the gents.
Once seated, it took around 15 minutes before anyone came back to take our drinks order. Again, we were told how busy they were. Eventually our tea and coffee arrived, but they were served in plain, stained pots and cups that didn’t match the elegant setting others seemed to have. One cup even had cake stuck to the side, which was disappointing.
The food itself was very tasty and well presented, but over an hour into our visit the bubbles that were part of our booking still hadn’t arrived. When they finally did, it was accompanied once more by the same “sorry, we’re busy.” While I completely understand that weddings are big events, guests are still paying for what should be a special experience. Dirty cups, stained pots, uncleared tables, and glasses left down the hallways really let the place down, as well as staff not being around. I chose this venue for something elegant and memorable, but sadly it fell short. A simple pub lunch might have provided a more enjoyable and relaxed experience
